Barbara Johnson shot this film in 16mm for the Smithsonian's National
Anthropological Film Center in 1978. She was sent to Nepal to document
early childhood socialization and daily life in a large farming village
in the Kathmandu Valley. Ms. Johnson lived in the village for 15 and We
Know How To Do These Things: Birth in a Newar Village is made from the last hour of film she
shot in Nepal. This is a rare glimpse of home birth in the third world.
