by Barbara Johnson (1997, 40min) For these villagers, birth is in the hands of the women; while a young girl is in labor, the midwife, mother and mother-in-law alternate between comforting and story telling.

Barbara Johnson shot this film in 16mm for the Smithsonian's National Anthropological Film Center in 1978. She was sent to Nepal to document early childhood socialization and daily life in a large farming village in the Kathmandu Valley. Ms. Johnson lived in the village for 15 and We Know How To Do These Things: Birth in a Newar Village is made from the last hour of film she shot in Nepal. This is a rare glimpse of home birth in the third world.
